Ryan did not attend yesterday’s premiere and press conference for “Only God Forgives” at Cannes Film Festival. THR is reporting that a letter from Ryan was read during the press conference of the movie.
If the rain isn’t enough to dampen spirits Wednesday, the absence of star Ryan Gosling might do so. The star is skipping the red carpet premiere of Only God Forgives to stay in Detroit to continue shooting his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster.
Festival organizers and Croisette gossips had been anxiously waiting all week for word on if the actor would attend. At the morning press conference for the film, festival director Thierry Fremaux instead read a letter in which the actor said travel restrictions were preventing him from flying and apologized for not being able to make it from the Motor City to the Med.
“I do not have the right to fly while I’m filming,” Gosling stated in the letter, citing insurance restrictions while he works. “I tried everything to bend the insurance company, but it fell on deaf ears.”
The schedule for the festival was also announced. “Only God Forgives” is part of the official competition and will have it’s first screenings on May 22. The movie will also have an additional screening the next day. Still no word if Ryan will attend the festival, but he is filming his directorial debut so he might be too busy.
The official Cannes press kit for “Only God Forgives” was released, it features new still of the movie and an in-depth interview with director Nicolas Winding Refn. We added the scans featuring Ryan in our gallery. You can download the press kit at the official website of the festival.

(Indiewire) RADiUS-TWC already teased us earlier this month with their first trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s second go-round with Ryan Gosling, confirming that the duo’s follow-up to “Drive” would be just as hard-hitting and awesome as their first collaboration.
And Now? Consider us stoked. A mere few hours after Cannes confirmed that “Only God Forgives” would be playing in competition just as “Drive” did two years ago (culminating in a Best Director win for Refn), an international trailer surfaced online, showcasing more of the film’s plot and Kristin Scott Thomas’ blistering performance as Gosling’s vengeful mother.
