Your casual disregard for an industry that provides for you on a basic everyday level is typical of an uniformed and could-care-less attitude. Since when is it an inconvenience to learn through a source and speak from experience?

Should you care to know:

1) breeding for polled genetics IS widely practiced through most every cattle operation in North America. Unfortunately predicting the outcome of genetics in cattle would be like predicting the eye colour your baby will be born with. We’re only farmers – not controllers of the universe, so we work with what we can, ok?

2) The de horning process is nothing like what you’ve described. The fabrications conceived in order to get public attention for your letter are a far cry from what actually happens. But I suppose those truths are too boring to receive public attention.

3) Please excuse farmers and ranchers everywhere for trying to make a few dollars and feed our own families as well as yours. Just because this industry is a business does not detract from the passion and courage it takes to dedicate your life to caring for the land and for animals. I will tell my story again and again so that more may know the joy, the heart breaks, the life this business is and how deeply it is set into my heart.

For anyone else out there that cares to know:

Talk to your farmers and ranchers, visit them, take a drive out of the city to see what really goes on in order that you may eat every day. We’re up out of bed every two hours during calving season to check on cows ready to give birth, we’re hauling lambs into our back porch and sleeping on the floor next to them till they get strength, we’re eating two out of three meals out of the back of a pick up truck in a wheat field so we can maintain the long hours of harvest more efficiently.

You will never know truth if you don’t experience it. I promise the world of agriculture will not disappoint you.
